Andhra Kids emerge as Mathematics Wizards
Indians makes there mark at most prestigious global event
on mental arithmetics at Colombo, Sri Lanka
Vie against thousand kids from eight countries across
Asian and European Continents and bring laurels
Hyderabad, December 09....
State kids are in the forefront of a leading mental arithmetic revolution at the just concluded biggest ever international competition on mental arithmetic held at Colombo in Sri Lanka. 15 member contingent out of 100 strong Indian delegation that represented India vied with thousand and odd kids from Asian and European continents like China, Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Thailand, India and UK, and sweeped the awards at all the eight levels of the competition of the 7th International Competition on Abacus and Mental Arithmetic. With their unusual mental arithmetic prowess they out beat their foreign counterparts by showcasing lighting fast computing skills by attempting 125 to 180 mathematical sums in just under ‘5 minutes’, which qualifies for a record feat by any standard.
It’s a matter of great pride that kids from our state have shown remarkable skills leaving their peers from other countries way behind. Baby M. Sriveda Reddy, a 2nd level student from Nizamabad emerged as the Champion in her category. Master Naman Agarwal from Hyderabad stood fourth in 8th level. He is the youngest boy of the whole lot of kids who competed in 8th level from all the countries. The state now has become a home to the budding intelligentsia and are home to some child prodigies, remarked Mr. J. Sampath Kumar, Area Partner of SIP Academy, Andhra Pradesh.
When the compere at the event announced Sriveda Reddy’s name as the Champion, her mother, screamed, shouted in joy and ran all over the Sugadadasa National Sports Complex where the competition was held. And hugged her child to breathlessness the moment she came down from stage with the trophy. Seldom you expect 1000 and odd international people to hear of a small non-descript town like Nizamabad in Andhra Pradesh, where Sriveda Reddy comes from. Suddenly many lesser known towns and small villages in India like Hoskote, Ranebennur, Kolar in Karnataka; Vadalur in Tamil Nadu; Nizamabad, Hyderabad and Zaheerabad in Andhra Pradesh were in news for the achievements of the young kids of those respective cities.
Indians prowess in mathematical skills is once again proven in an International forum. And me being a part of it gives me immense satisfaction, says Mr. Sampath.
In a high scoring test of accuracy and speed of computation of numerical problems, 9 of the Championship awards out of the total of 11 categories were bagged by the Indian prodigies. In fact, the Indian contingent bagged 31 of the 53 prizes in the International Championship.
There couldn’t have been a better occasion than this, as every child representing India from the State of Andhra Pradesh walked away with trophies and earned acclamation from everybody including Mr. R. M. Srivastava, First Secretary (Eduction), High Commission of India in Sri Lanka. He graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour and Mr. Susil Premajayantha, Minister for Education, Govt. of Sri Lanka.
The kids from Andhra Pradesh who took part in the competition include M. Sriveda Reddy, P. Ravi Chandra, S. Shabharish, T. Shalini, P.V. Anudeep, D. Shonith, P. Balraj, P. Samaresh, S. Srija, G. Rakshith Reddy, A.N. Spurthi Reddy, Namya Gupta, Naman Agarwal, Pravek Trivedi.
Impressed by the little champs Mr. R.M. Srivastava, First Secretary (Education) of High Commission of India in Sri Lanka as rare gesture and encouragement visited along with his wife the hotel where the kids from Andhra Pradesh were put up and spent time with them, posed for photos and lauded their performance.
Earlier speaking on the occasion Mr. R.M. Srivastava said that Mathematics give confidence, clarity. Two plus two is four or five multiplied by ten is fifty. There is no ambiguity or uncertainty about. It is nice seeking young Indian tiny tots of 6 to 12 years shining in an international competition being in a different country. These children are undeterred, even unaccompanied by their parents here, he said. He wished them all the very best in their future endeavours.
"What I did not like about my trip to Sri Lanka was coming back"
, says prodigial Sriveda Reddy when asked about her trip. But she doesn’t have any idea of her future. But she wants to grab every opportunity thrown open to her in future. However, Master Anudeep from Nizamabad is serious about his talent and wants to pursue it to greater heights.
The Andhra Pradesh team was lead by Mr. J. Sampath Kumar, Area Partner of SIP Academy India, Andhra Pradesh and Ms. Sunanda. The contest was held on December 2 at Colombo in Sri Lanka. The kids have arrived in city just now after touring places in Sri Lanka like Colombo, Candy and others.
Children performing acrobatics resembling monkey tricks in the playground has always been a familiar sight down the ages, no matter which part of the globe they may be in. But for today’s next generation, it’s acrobatics of another kind that’s keeping them limbered up and ready to take on any challenge life may throw at them. Today, it’s mental acrobatics that is taking up free time for many children around the world. The increasingly popular Abacus+Brain Gym programme is turning the state’s children into Mathematics wizards.

IIT-JEE:
students from State strike it rich
HYDERABAD: Students from
the State have reaped a rich harvest in the Indian Institutes of
Technology - Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) this year and more than
600 students are likely to get admission into various IITs.
The top ranker from the
State this year is Santosh Kumar who secured all India 15th rank and he
belongs to Narayana IIT Academy at Habsiguda. The second best rank from
the State is Varun Tripuraneni, a student of Ramaiah coaching institute.
Varun secured 18th rank.
Mr. Ramaiah's institute
continued its good performance with 115 students out of the 135 getting
ranks and these include 12 ranks below 100. Satish Kumar got 7th rank in
the SC category. Mr. Ramaiah said 80 out of the 115 are from areas other
than Hyderabad indicating the growing awareness of IIT education in the
State.
Corporate colleges also
contributed heavily to the success story. Narayana Group of institutions
claimed that 1,149 students from its institutions would get into IITs this
year of which 623 are from the State alone. About 180 students from the
reserves category were also successful. Similarly, Sri Chaitanya
Institutions claimed that 344 students from its institutions in the State
would get into IITs. Another 259 qualified for other institutes like IIST
and AISR.
Both the institutes
claimed the all India 6th ranker Ankit as `their' student. However, Ankit
later at a press conference, clarified that he had registered for Test
Series of Sri Chaitanya but also pursued Intensive Condensed Classroom
programme of Narayana institution.
The FIITJEE centre in
Hyderabad said 91 of its classroom programme students got a place in the
merit list. Similarly, Delta Education Academy said 41 students out of the
90 who appeared got seat-securing ranks from its institute. Other
institutes like Krishna Murthy IIT Academy and PAGE claimed a lot of their
students also secured good ranks.
State topper Santosh
Kumar prefers to join Computer Science at IIT Kanpur. He scored 962 marks
in Intermediate and 41st rank in EAMCET.
Next
worry is getting IIT of choice
This
year’s students are happy with their JEE scores, but they still have a
lot to worry about in coming days. Students,
who gave the IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) this year, gave a sigh
of relief after results were declared on Wednesday. But the new batch of
students has a lot of things to worry about. “Getting into an
institution of your choice is pretty tough” is what rankers feel now.
They are waiting for the counseling session, which will be held on June
19. At that time they will get a chance to interact with the faculty. This
may give a chance to make a decision.
This
year, a large number of students from Mumbai cleared the IIT-JEE. The city
outshone other zones like Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai and
Roorkee. This year Mumbai girl Ankita Sharma got the highest score among
women. Achin Bansal, from Delhi, was the all-India topper.
Of
the 2,43,029 students who gave the JEE, 7,200 passed, and will compete for
5, 537 seats at the seven IITs.
“Students’
performances have been better as compared to last year. There has been a
10 per cent rise in the number of students passing the exam this year. The
large numbers can be attributed to the fact that the JEE board is setting
easier papers. It was done to enhance the performance of students who
followed the self-study method,” said HS Pandalai, organising chairman
of JEE-2007. He added: “Most students who topped the JEE have said that
self-study was the key to their success.”
Following
the confusion prevailing among the student fraternity over the
implementation of the proposed 27 per cent OBC quota, IIT-Bombay said the
admissions to the seven IITs would be conducted as per the process
followed last year.
Juzer
Vasi, deputy director at IIT-Bombay said, “As per MHRD directives, there
will be no change in the admission process. This year’s process will not
include the 27 per cent OBC quota. Counseling for admission will begin on
June 18 and conclude on June 22.” Interestingly,
a majority of those who topped the JEE studied through their respective
state boards, thereby breaking the dominance of CBSE students.
Hyderabad student

Hyderabad:
Jahnvi Dhar of Brahm Prakash DAV School, Midhani Township, has done the
city proud by emerging all India topper in the CBSE Xth Board-2007

Niraj Public School fares well in ICSE
Niraj
Public School student Y. Chaitra emerged city topper in ICSE Class Xth
board examinations-2007 by scoring 98 percent. The State’s first
visually challenged student M.Pavitra, from the same school secured
distinction with 84 per cent.
Up to 25 percent Inter weightage in EAMCET
The State Government has decided to give weightage up to 25 percent in
EAMCET to the marks obtained in the in the Intermediate examination. This
will also inspire the student to take the Intermediate course seriously,
forcing lecturers to work better. The decision to introduce the weightage
was taken at a meeting held here on Friday by Chief Minster YS Rajashekar
Reddy with Higher Education Minster D.Srinivas and Senior officials. How
ever Full benefit of this decision was possible for the fresh batch of
students joining the first year in 2007-08. The weightage would be
applicable from 2009 EAMCET.
